There are several different experiences one can have of Australia. Each Australian will have different experiences of the country, including Indigenous, Immigrant, Refugee, rural, urban, and coastal experiences. The perspective I have chosen is an Indigenous Australian perspective, because they are the indigenous people of this land and belonged here before anyone else did, and yet they often find themselves facing stereotyping and prejudice.
The identity of an Indigenous Australian would be obviously different to other Australians. Indigenous Australians and their lifestyles are often deeply affected by their background, culture and beliefs, as well as their deep connections with the land and animals. In the past, Indigenous Australians would have had mostly bad experiences due to their mistreatment by white Australian people. Indigenous Australians play a big part in Australia's culture as a whole, and yet many people look past the spiritual part of Indigenous life and admire the artwork produced through it. I believe this perspective on the Australian experience can bring into light the ignorance of others and the way they choose to ignore past wrongdoings or even the beliefs of an entire culture and instead look past it all at the 'pretty art.' An Indigenous Australian's perspective on the Australian experience would differ from my own in a big way. I do not have the same history nor do I come from the same sort of background. My culture is not the same as theirs. I am also a white Australian who does not deal with the same kinds of stereotypes faced by Indigenous Australians. I believe the most interesting part about learning about Australian experiences is seeing all the different ways people can experience the country and trying to see things from the perspectives of other people, which some people who accept these stereotypes without question or who are prejudiced against a particular group of people struggle to do. I believe the best part of this topic is being taught to see things and people in a new light. |
